Tao Te Machine is a three-year reading of the 道德經 — one chapter every two weeks, encountered together by an ancient text, a human reader, and a machine.

The premise

For each of the eighty-one chapters, a language model offers a first poetic rendering and a reflection; a human reads, questions, and answers in a recorded conversation that may revise the rendering; the first version is always kept. Over roughly three years the chapters open in sequence, and the accumulated dialogue becomes a book.

The people

The project is edited and voiced by a human reader, working with the machine’s renderings. Editor bylines, guest voices, and any specialist reviewers are named on each chapter and in thecolophon as they actually contribute — not before.

What it is not

It is not a definitive translation, not a work of scholarship claiming authority, and not a finished edition. It is an honest, provisional encounter, with every voice marked for what it is. Themethod page sets out the sources and the disclosure.
